Entry-deterring policy differentiation by electoral candidates
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies the equilibria of a one-dimensional spatial model in which three candidates seek to maximize their probabilities of winning, are uncertain about the voters’ preferences, and may move whenever they wish. In the presence of enough uncertainty there is an equilibrium in which two candidates enter simultaneously at distinct positions in the first period and either the third candidate does not enter or enters between the first two in the second period. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. More can be Less: Hyper Plurality of Candidates, the Rationality of Electoral Choice and Need for Electoral Reform in India
A large number of candidates have become a regular feature of Indian elections. Given the regulatory concerns the problem has evoked, the paper reviews the process of candidate entry in select developed countries. The review reveals the presence of diverse approaches, ruling out the necessity for extreme options like debarring fringe candidates – a course suggested by several Indian expert grou...
متن کاملCandidate Entry and Political Polarization: An Antimedian Voter Theorem
We study a citizen-candidate-entry model with private information about ideal points. We fully characterize the unique symmetric equilibrium of the entry game and show that only relatively “extreme” citizen types enter the electoral competition as candidates, whereas more “moderate” types never enter. It generally leads to substantial political polarization, even when the electorate is not pola...
متن کاملDouble-entry Accounting Provides Software-Independent Algorithm for Confirming the Integrity of Automated Election Tallies
This paper proposes the use of double-entry accounting to maintain the integrity of election data as they go through the processes of counting, canvassing, consolidation, and reporting. Double-entry accounting brings to election tallies its well-known benefits of minimizing errors, deterring fraud, and maintaining the integrity of large collections of numeric data. Its superiority to single-ent...
متن کاملPolitical Motivations ∗
Are politicians motivated by policy outcomes or by the perks of office? The answer to this question is central to understanding the behavior of office holders and the policies they produce. Despite the question’s importance, however, the existing literature is not well suited to provide an answer. To shed light on the issue of political motivations I exploit a basic fact: to hold office, one mu...
متن کاملChallenger Entry and Voter Learning
We develop a model of strategic interaction between voters and potential electoral challengers to sitting incumbents, in which the very fact of a costly challenge conveys relevant information to voters. Given incumbent failure in office, challenger entry is more likely, but the threat of entry by inferior challengers creates an incentive for citizens to become more politically informed. At the ...
